The GOP tried every trick in the book to stop another trillion from being added to the deficit in the form of that awful omnibus spending bill, which is a good thing to stop from happening, don't get me wrong. However, in the same breath, Republican representatives voted to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," in the face of military commanders who said that repeal was a terrible idea, as well as the majority of servicemembers in active combat who said the same thing. Okay, great. The GOP has got our back on the economic front. But what about the moral front? What about the assault on freedom of religion that will follow the repeal? Don't scoff: military chaplains are in grave danger already, according to the implementation plans that Elaine Donnelly writes about here. Once these chaplains are forced out of the service, further assaults on the homefront are inevitable.
If there was anyone who should have stood up to the repeal and blocked its passage, it should have been the Republican Party. Putting the issue of morality aside, they should have blocked its passage because the military spoke out against it, and if there's anyone who knows how certain legislation will directly affect the military, it's the military. Instead of listening to their concerns, the legislative branch gave them the finger.
Sadly, our leaders have proven that they are not willing to take a stand for what really matters. Sure, we can count on them to not add another trillion to the national deficit, but what's the point in that when religious freedom and the military's capacity to do its job without unreasonable interference are on the line? Give Obama and the Senate Dems their trillion and our grandchildren will pay it off someday. Refusing to stand for moral issues can't be paid off in a decade or mortgaged to the next generation for them to deal with.
I'm angry. I'm angry at a party that should have done its job and won this battle instead of conceding victory to the enemy. I'm angry at a President who's so hellbent on appeasing the gay Left that he'll assault the military and religious freedom to keep them happy. Our leaders stand for nothing, so they fall for anything, but somehow expect us to catch them. No longer.
Don't count on my vote ever again, because I'm not going to. The GOP and politics in general are a waste of time, because they, like all other politicians, are just in it for themselves and their career and their power. They promised otherwise, but they delivered just what we've come to expect from them. The Psalmist was right when he said to not put trust in men. Maybe I should have listened to him all along.
